Gears lose momentum and stop. I feel it in my shoulders. The table is clear, the dishes are done or left to wait depending on the clock. I ask the coded question, can I get you anything? “Sure” means a trip I was already making to the fridge for two instead of one. “Maybe” is the same, but I’ll finish it for her in an hour. Goodnight.
